WHEN SHOULD YOU SEE AN EYE DOCTOR?

Regular eye examinations are essential to keep you healthy. Your eye doctor can detect eye problems such as cataracts, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy during routine exams, most of which can be treated successfully in the early stages.

At Bellemore Optometry, we provide a range of services and products to our clients. Our highly-skilled eye doctors are experts at:

  • Comprehensive eye exams

  • Ocular health evaluations

  • LASIK surgery co-management

  • Emergency eye care

  • Contact lens examination

  • Infant eye exams (for infants of 6-months and above)

In this blog post, we discuss when you should see your eye doctor.

• Persistent headaches

If you suffer from constant headaches, it might be time to schedule an appointment with your eye doctor. In most cases, working in dim light or staring at the computer screen for long hours could be the cause. In severe cases, your headaches may be caused by long-sightedness, astigmatism or even glaucoma.

• Eye infections

Redness, pain, blurred vision and sensitivity to light are some of the symptoms of eye infections. If you notice any of these symptoms, visit a doctor immediately. Your doctor may prescribe a course of antibiotics.

• Floaters and bright flashes

Floaters are tiny specks, noticeable in your field of vision, mainly when you look up at the sky or on a white wall. Floaters are usually not a major problem. However, if you notice a shadow in your peripheral vision or flashing lights in addition to floaters, it could be because of a detached retina. If not treated early, a detached retina can result in blindness.

• Eye pain

Eye pain is usually caused by dry eyes and can be treated easily with eye drops. Sometimes, eye pain can be an indication of conditions such as a scratched cornea, glaucoma or even eye cancer.

• Squinting

If you need to squint to see road signs while driving or look at the computer screen while working, it could be a sign that you need eyeglasses. Squinting enables you to see better by changing your eye shape and allowing in a limited amount of light, which is more easily focused on the retina. Squinting repeatedly is not sustainable nor an effective way to resolve your vision problems. It’s better to get a pair of eyeglasses to correct your vision.

• Diabetes

It’s very important to monitor your vision if you are diabetic. Diabetic patients can be affected by diabetic retinopathy, which might cause blindness if left untreated. The condition damages the light-sensitive layer of your eye tissues.
