WHAT IS DRY EYE?

Aside from causing discomfort, dry eyes can also result in long term corneal damage. Dry eyes can be caused by inadequate tear volume or poor tear quality. Normally, tears refresh and lubricate the surface of the eye. In a patient with dry eyes, the eyes aren’t able to distribute tears uniformly, or the tears formed are evaporating too quickly. Dry eye is a chronic condition that requires treatment and monitoring.

SYMPTOMS OF DRY EYES

Persons with dry eyes can experience some or all of the following symptoms:

  • Burning

  • Tearing

  • Redness

  • The sensation of something in your eye

  • Grittiness

  • Irritation

  • Blurred vision

At Bellemore Optometry, we offer dry eye therapy based on your individual needs and not a one-size-fits-all therapy. We perform a full dry-eye workup prior to starting therapy to determine appropriate therapy.

WHAT CAUSES DRY EYES?

Various causes can disrupt your tear film, which in turn leads to dry eyes. Some of these are:

  • Ageing

  • Medications such as antidepressants

  • Excessive computer use

  • Laser surgery

  • Menopause

  • Vitamin A deficiency

  • Allergies

  • Auto-immune conditions

  • Contact lenses

HOW IS DRY EYE DIAGNOSED?

Our dry eye diagnosis is a straightforward procedure. Once we inspect your symptoms, we conduct a comprehensive eye exam. In addition to that, we assess your eye health history, and overall health, to make a diagnosis.

HOW WILL DRY EYE HARM MY EYES?

Apart from general irritation and redness, dry eye can affect your eyes' health in many ways. Tears are responsible for washing away debris from your eyes and removing infection-causing bacteria. Dry eye prevents your eyes from performing this function. If your eyes are too dry, it can actually impair your vision. In serious cases, dry eye can lead to the formation of ulcers in your cornea.

CAN DRY EYE BE TREATED?

There is no one approach for dry eye treatment. While one treatment will work for another person, it might not work for you. We can offer a range of treatments till you find one that works for your dry eye.
